I’m an enthusiast for improvised music. There are as many ways to make improvised music as there are people who make it, but what interests me in this blog is to discuss the current state of the progressive branch of improvised jazz known as out-bop.  The basic question “What is out-bop?” is explored in a statement on my trio Mystic Out-Bop Review’s website. It is my contention that the only way that jazz stays alive as a vital energetic force  is through improvised invention via performance. There is a tendency with academic persuits of jazz that kill this energy.  The irony  is that jazz symbolizes musical rebellion and yet we have evolved culturally to allow the establishment to define it.  The goal of this blog is to challenge entrenched definions of jazz.
